Flourish Ventures promotes John Onwualu to Investment Partner
Since joining Flourish, John has played an important role in shaping the firm’s work across financial infrastructure, particularly at the intersection of payments, fraud and compliance, AI in financial services, and the global evolution of stablecoins. He is deeply involved across the portfolio as a board observer and trusted partner, working closely with founders who are building the future of finance in regulated, enterprise-facing, and globally scaled businesses.
“John is an energetic force and one of the most trusted partners to our founders,” said Emmalyn Shaw, Co-founder and Managing Partner of Flourish Ventures. “He brings a rare ability to bridge capital markets, regulation, and fintech expertise. Founders lean on him for strategic thinking, deep engagement, and hands-on support.”
At Flourish, John supports portfolio companies through major inflection points, particularly around fundraising, enterprise go-to-market strategy, M&A considerations, and cross-border expansion. He’s a leading voice in the firm’s thesis that true innovation often emerges from overlooked backgrounds and in complex, regulated markets.
In parallel, John is driving Flourish’s work in global stablecoin and next-generation payments infrastructure. He works closely with companies including CipherOwl, Borderless, and Kulipa, helping founders navigate regulatory dynamics, connect with financial institutions, and scale products designed for cross-border and emerging-market use cases. These efforts reflect Flourish’s broader focus on how new financial rails intersect with policy, compliance, and global capital flows.
John is deeply active in the firm’s regulatory and policy ecosystem engagement. He convened more than 20 AI-native financial services companies in Washington, D.C., to engage directly with senior regulators on the implications of artificial intelligence for financial services and banking, reinforcing the firm’s role as a thoughtful participant in shaping the future of financial infrastructure.
John takes inspiration from his father, a Nigerian immigrant who built small businesses on both continents. This history drives his empathy for founders who are navigating volatility and risk. Early in his career, John worked at Morgan Stanley and SoFi where he developed an understanding of how technology and regulation often talk past each other. This insight led him to the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation where he built and led the agency’s first direct equity investment platform, seeing firsthand how government and policy priorities shape private-market outcomes.
For John, the best investor-founder relationships are built on a shared understanding of the “why” behind the company. He aims to offer guidance and structure for founders who invest their whole selves into building a company. He supports Flourish’s goal to discover new talent pipelines and companies, knowing that these structural gaps present opportunity.
John’s promotion reflects the leadership, judgment, and responsibility he already carries at Flourish, and the firm’s conviction in his long-term role as a partner to founders building durable, globally relevant financial infrastructure.
