John Onwualu

John possesses a unique blend of investing, corporate finance, operations and public sector experience that guides his investment focus and aligns with the team’s passion to give individuals and small businesses the opportunity for economic empowerment and financial well being.

Prior to joining Flourish, John served as a Managing Director for the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), the U.S. government’s $60 billion development finance institution. During his tenure, John built and led the agency’s first direct equity investment group, investing in innovative companies creating impact in emerging markets around the world.

Before the DFC, John reported to the CFO at SoFi, a leading consumer fintech company. At SoFi, John spearheaded special projects, streamlined business operations, and worked on multiple acquisitions, including the $1.2 billion acquisition of Galileo Financial Technologies.

John began his career at Morgan Stanley as an intern in 2010, becoming an emerging markets credit trader. He ultimately left as a Vice President in the firm’s investment bank, advising leveraged buyouts, mergers and acquisitions in the business services and consumer sectors.

John is a graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania where he concentrated in Finance. Inspired by his Nigerian heritage, John also received a minor degree in African Studies.
